A titanium aero bike from another planet. Read more
No. 22’s new Reactor frameset comes in hot as the world’s first fully aero titanium road bicycle, a scintillating mix of 3D printing and in-house fabrication set to hit the road in 2025.
In the No.22 lineup, the Reactor has always been the most race-oriented road frame, and the new version takes speed against the clock to another level. No.22 developed the silhouette in-house and used multiple CFD simulations to tune the shape. While it is scheduled for wind tunnel testing and validation before launch, the numbers quoted by No.22 at the press launch are impressive if they hold up in the wind, with the new Reactor leading with a 30-40% drag reduction compared to the current model. That’s one slick whip.
Aero is the headline here, but this wouldn’t be a No.22 if the new Reactor didn’t enhance performance in other areas, like drivetrain stiffness, which No.22 believes offers the most efficient power transfer available on a titanium bicycle frame. To achieve this, No.22 redesigned the down tube, bottom bracket intersection, and chain stays, optimized with the freedom that only 3D printing allows. All other tubing profiles and intersections were also reimagined from the ground up to help temper drivetrain stiffness with the legendary ride quality titanium is known for.
No.22 tells us that the production version of the Aero Reactor will be printed as sections which can be machined and welded in-house, allowing No. 22 to utilize their decades of expertise resulting in tighter controls over quality, tolerances, and finishes.
“3D printed titanium has phenomenal structural properties. Printing internal support structures anywhere in the frame gives us a level of control over the ride quality that has not been possible before. We can add stiffness in high load areas like the bottom bracket, dropouts, and head tube for very little weight while playing with structure in fine detail throughout the frame to ensure it delivers the ride quality we need”, said Bryce Gracey, Co-Founder of No. 22.
