This week, we share another beautiful sample of Mosaic's handiwork. A bike destined to be a multi-purposed vehicle with a clean, utilitarian approach. The goal of the project was a single bike that could serve as a daily commuter, a gravel adventure bike, and a rain ready winter bike. Mosaic's GT-1 was the perfect platform for such a bike with its ample tire clearance, rugged titanium construction, and array of optional accessory mounts. Follow along as we dive into the details.
Stripped of the superfluous, this frame is quite bare. Forgoing nearly all graphics or emblems, the frame features just an etched head tube logo and a tiny Mosaic mark on the chainstay. The only other details are the beautifully executed welds.
With a nearly full grayscale bike, we leaned on a full suite of Chris King components to bring some pop to the build. A deep blue headset, bottom bracket, and set of R45 hubs not only keep the bike spinning smoothly, but deliver some additional visual interest throughout the bike.
Up front, the control center is all Enve. A classic bar and stem are mounted to an all-road fork, providing a comfortable yet bombproof front end. The rear end sees a custom Ti seatpost from Mosaic, perfectly integrating with the frameset. Resting on top is a Brooks C13 Cambium saddle, a classy touch for a bespoke bike like this.
While not typically considered part of the cockpit, pedals make up the final piece to the contact point trifecta. Every person is unique and having leg length discrepancy is something many of us deal with. The Speedplay Syzrs are one of the only MTB style pedals that addresses them in an effective way. While you could stack shims under an SPD cleat, that would make them totally impossible to walk in. By addressing spacing at the pedal, you maintain all the walkability of a MTB shoe.
On to the drivetrain...
We've really been enjoying this set up for gravel/all-road builds. A Shimano Di2 drivetrain with 2x11 gearing. 1x systems are amazing and we still use them all the time, but now that we have clutch equipped rear derailleurs that can pair with a double chaining, it's great having the option to have the full gear range only a double can provide. At the crank, we selected 50/34t chainrings with 172.5 arms. Out back is an 11-34t cassette. Everything is Dura-Ace, save for the Ultegra RX rear derailleur.
Wheels are a custom built set of Enve 3.4 AR rims laced to the King R45 hubs mentioned earlier. The 25mm internal width of the AR rims provides excellent support for wider tires while still having an aero advantage when the wheels get up to speed. The bike rolls on 30mm Schwalbe G-One tubeless tires.
Due to the nature of all the uses this bike will get called into service for, we made sure the bike was equipped with the necessary mounting points for full fenders, racks, and other accessories.
The final detail? Custom AC edition Silca bottle cages. No better way cap off the build!
A true all-rounder, up to the task of day in and day out abuse, no matter what you throw at it. We're continually impressed with the versatility of the GT-1 and this project was the perfect build to prove it.
