Bike of the Week: A One of a Kind Grey Scale Pinarello Dogma F12

Derek Yarra |

Ride like the pros. Be like Froome, look like Sagan... We see it every day,  bike brands using the likeness of their marquee teams and riders as a selling point for their latest bikes and "limited edition" paint jobs. While there's nothing wrong with wanting to assimilate with your heroes, we are more believers in doing things your own way. Our latest Pinarello Dogma is a perfect example of that. Eschewing the stock graphic offerings in favor something more personalized and unique, this Dogma F12 is unlike anything you'll see in the pro peloton.

Once again, we collaborated with our friends at Velocolour. No matter how complex the project, Velocolour approaches everything with the same level of craft and sophistication. Even seemingly simplistic designs come out with an elevated level of detail and awe. For this bike, the goal was for something cleaner, almost like it could have been a factory design, but still be something beautiful and unique. The result was this two-tone grey finish you see here, with gold pin-striping and a few strips of tri-colour to pay honor to the Pinarello Italian heritage.

While the paint job has the Italian theme, for the drive train we went Japanese. Specifically Dura-Ace, in an electronic shifting and hydraulic braking configuration. The only non Shimano piece is the Quarq DFour crank. While Shimano does now have a power meter crank, our rider uses Quarq systems on other bikes, so we made the call to keep the telemetry consistent.

The cockpit is the Most integrated bar/stem, designed to perfectly match with the F12 frameset, and paint matched with the rest of the bike. The matching spacers and computer mount are an especially nice touch. The custom details continue on to the rear end of the bike with a Busyman wrapped saddle.

Of course a bike like this can't be built with any ordinary wheelset. A pair of Lightweight Meilenstein Schwarz Edition wheels certainly do this one justice.

And the icing on the cake? The cranks spins on a Ceramicspeed DUB bottom bracket while the rear derailleur is set off with a set of red Ceramicspeed pulley wheels. Blingy, yes, but the smoothness is something you can truly feel.

To sum this bike up in one word, DAMN, would suffice pretty well. While we always love a quality Pinarello build, taking them to this level of custom is what we do best.  As beautiful as it is on the eyes, every single piece was selected to deliver optimum performance, tailored to how our client rides.
