Open Bikes

When Open bikes arrived on the scene, heralded by their superlight hardtail, the ONE, in 2012, the bike world (mostly) yawned. Then, when the U.P all-road bike arrived in 2015, a shift happened. The upstart brand, brainchild of two industry veterans, helped completely change the way the industry thought about road bikes, with wide tires, disc brakes, and thru-axles suddenly becoming normal. The Open U.P is still one of the most versatile gravel, adventure, or even road platforms available today, capable of tackling an extreme swath of terrain and events, and its ultralight Open Upper sibling ups the ante in the performance arena. Born in Switzerland, Open bikes are the result of a collaboration between former BMC general manager Andy Kessler and Cervélo co-founder Gerard Vroomen. Born out of a desire to simplify, Open's disruptive designs continue to shift perceptions on what bikes are capable of and where they can take the rider, with the award-winning UP setting the bar to which all other "mixed-surface" bikes are measured. Open’s small size, lean methodology, and innovative mindset allows it to pivot on a dime, with many prescient concepts arriving before their time, like disc brakes on drop-bar bikes, and manipulating carbon tube shapes to make their extreme ideas geometrically possible. The latest chapter in the Open story is the WI.DE. An evolution of the game changing U.P, pushing the boundaries even further with even more tire clearance and capabilities. It's like a drop bar, fully rigid MTB of the 80s, reimagined for the modern era.

Partington Wheels

Wheels - equally essential to all bikes but not all wheels are created equal, especially not wheels from upstart Australian brand, Partington. To ride with Partington wheels is to experience an engineering epiphany, a sublime sensation that starts the moment you set out onto the road. Founded by namesake Jon Partington to reimagine advanced wheel production and performance, Partington wheels are designed and made in Victoria, Australia, where they exist in good company, only a stone's throw from Baum and Prova cycles.  Cycling and motorsport have always drawn close parallels, and that's undoubtedly true of Partington. Originally a machinist, Jon became a design engineer, working on transmissions and powertrains for companies like Prodrive, Antonov, and eventually Ford. Then, in 2012, he went back to academia as a PhD scholar at Deakin University in Advanced Composites. That collective experience and dedication to knowledge set him on his path to founding Partington Wheels. We're plenty familiar with boutique bike wheels at Above Category, and clearly, we've got a bit of a thing for Australian design and craftsmanship, so it should come as no surprise that Partington wheels caught our attention. However, while there's no shortage of exceptional bicycle wheels these days, it's a rare occurrence that a brand appears and elevates the art at their first attempt. Partington's flagship product, the R-Series wheels, are nothing short of exceptional. From a distance, they look like a modern aero wheel but get them in your hands for a closer look, and you'll soon realize they're anything but. Spin one in your hands, and you'll be struck by their weight - or lack thereof. Tipping the scales at only 1200g, the R-Series are about as light as an aero disc-brake wheel gets. Take another look, and the eye will skip from one stunning detail to another.  You'll likely notice first the striking carbon spokes, still a rarity even in this late age of bicycle technology. Follow one down from the rim toward the hub, and you'll note that the spoke doesn't simply end at a flange but rather wraps around the hub shell and returns to the rim again. The engineering is imaginative; their design and execution flawless. But riding Partington's R-Series on the road reveals just how genuinely transformative a set of these wheels can be. For a long time, we've accepted the trade-off: for stiffness, we give up compliance. For weight, we give up tracking. And for aero, we give up a little bit of everything. The modern crop of elite wheels have all made strides in unifying those pillars, but none have achieved it with such exquisite perfection as Partington. Here at Above Category, we're honored to be Partington's premier North American partner. We've put a lot of miles on the R-Series wheels ourselves, and we can say with certainty that they're an upgrade to your road bike that you truly won't regret. We get a very limited quantity of these wheels incoming from Australia each month. If you're keen to get a pair of your own, place your order here now. With any questions at all, feel free to reach out!

Pegoretti Bikes

What makes a great bicycle? Is it the material? The geometry? The welder? For decades, fans of Pegoretti exquisite steel bicycles have held that it was a man, Dario Pegoretti. One of the most celebrated frameshops in the world, Pegoretti bikes blend classic materials with new technologies to create modern performance machines. Forget the clichéd descriptions: springy, whippy, heavy, and so on. To ride a Pegoretti is to experience the fullest realization of what a steel bike can be. The Marcelo’s stout, oversize tubes and crisp, eager response under power are perfect for knife-fight style American crit racing. The Duende’s slimmer dimensions offer the perfect all-day ride, or a spirited sprint for lighter riders. And the stainless-steel Responsorium, built from tubes designed especially for Dario, is an alchemic combination of the two. And that paint. Any discussion of Pegoretti has to include paint. Even “stock” schemes are unlike any you’ll find elsewhere, not to mention the boundless creativity of the custom Ciavete program. A Pegoretti is as beautiful to behold as it is to pedal. Sadly, Dario passed away suddenly in 2018. Dario was more than a business partner; he was a friend, and we miss him terribly. But Dario’s genius was in more than just building bicycles; he built a way of building bicycles, and a company to build them, so that it would survive him. Dario took on few apprentices, but those he did often stayed permanently. For 20 years, Pietro Pietricola has been his lieutenant, compatriot, shopmate, foil and lunchtime companion, all while mastering the art and craft of Pegoretti Cicli. It might sound like sacrilege to some, but in our view, his skill rivals Dario’s. It is in Pietro’s supremely capable hands that Pegoretti Cicli continues, along with Gian Maria, and Andrea, and we are proud to continue our long association with Pegoretti Cicli as the company takes its next steps.
