The Twelve Days of Breathtaking Builds: Day Three

DAY THREE: THE MULTICOLORED MOSAIC

Today's Breathtaking Build has a roundabout kind of story. This bike was never supposed to exist. Originally, this bike was a Mosaic GS-1, built with one specific purpose in mind, above all others: The infamous, brutal, and equally breathtaking Dirty Kanza, the mother of all gravel races. Unfortunately, fate had other plans in mind - soon after the GS-1 was delivered, it was snatched from its owner's garage, never to see the flint rock of Kansas. In response, Mosaic, in a magnanimous gesture, allowed the GS-1's owner to take head welder Aaron Barcheck's personal GT-1 on a journey of self-discovery at Kanza. In return, the bereaved GS-1 owner took things up a notch and put an order in for his own Mosaic GT-1. This is the result, a gravel racer built with a bell and all the whistles.

While in most of the world of cycling, titanium is left raw, we tend to treat the topic with a bit more ambivalence. Meet Boulder's finest, wrapped in a stunning paint scheme from VeloColour in Toronto, Canada. There are no decals here, and like Baum Cycles, every detail is masked and hand-painted, right down to the multi-colored stripes and Mosaic logo, a window to the bike's raw Ti soul.
Flat mount brakes shed a good bit of weight for "road-ish" disc applications, and look extremely clean on ENVE's GRD gravel fork.

The custom-painted Mosaic headbadge and SRAM's new Red disc levers keep things spotless with a unified aesthetic.

The double shift-lever setup belies this GT-1's 1x drivetrain, complete with a 10-42t cassette and SRAM Red D-Zero Quarq powermeter. Born on the mountain side of the sport, for mixed-terrain racing this is the setup we'd choose for most events. The clutched rear derailleur and single narrow-wide chainring make chain drops a thing of the past, and the mechanical single-derailleur setup is dead-reliable.

ENVE M50 rims wrapped with Teravail's fast-rolling Galena file-tread tires to tackle most surfaces keep this light, stiff, and fast.

We weren't kidding about the bell. The beautifully manufactured Spurcycle Bell has found its way onto even our high-end road builds, with its distinct, loud ring giving peace of mind in any situation where the rider needs to be noticed. Made down the road from us in Sausalito, CA, it's a timeless piece that will last as long as the titanium bike it's on does.
