Emporia, Kansas. Normally when you tell someone they look like they've put on weight it is not always received as a compliment, but in the case of the reincarnation of the No. 22 Drifter it certainly is.
Sitting out at the Unbound Bicycle Expo in downtown Emporia, Kansas for all the world to see is the last version of the much beloved Drifter and it looks right at home surrounded by all the latest gravel steeds.
The Drifter is now sporting custom 3D printed chain stay yokes, which allows No.22 to build a gravel racer which will take an officially stated 54mm tire (although the Gravel Kings which are mounted measure out to an actual 57mm) and an officially stated 48 tooth chainring, but there is rumor you can stuff a 50 tooth in there.
They have also built the new Drifter around a suspension corrected carbon fork, allowing you to choose between rigid and sprung depending on what your ride requires. And with this in mind the geometry is much more race oriented than the previous version. With all the changes on the gravel scene this makes the Drifter No.22's gravel race option and the Drifter X now moves into more of a road/all-road option, with the X also getting some changes and room for larger tires.
You may pay a little weight penalty over a similarly specced carbon fiber bike, but between the stunning looks of the new Drifter, the amazing craftsmanship and the robustness of the materials, it looks like a longterm winner.
